Frequently Asked Questions

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a conservative, non-invasive, and preventative health care, and it is the second largest healing profession in the world. Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system in the body. The body’s natural healing process cannot function normally unless the nervous system is in proper balance. The vulnerable spinal cord is covered by 24 moving vertebrae; when these bones lose their normal motion or position, they can irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the function of the tissues, organs, or systems the nerves control. When this happens, it is called a Subluxation. Chiropractic is based on the science of locating and correcting these areas of spinal joint dysfunction, allowing the body to function optimally.

How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic works by restoring your body’s innate ability to heal itself. When under proper control from your nervous system, all of the cells, tissues, and organs of your body are designed to resist disease and function properly. However, if there are misalignments in your spine, this can create interference in the body’s nervous system, causing the nervous system and the body to not function properly. The chiropractic approach to better health is to locate and correct the source of interference (subluxations/misaligned vertebrae) in your nervous system, and restore optimum health in the body. Chiropractors, through specific chiropractic adjustments correct the source of interference, allowing the body to heal itself. A healthy spine and a healthy lifestyle are essential to great health!

What is a subluxation?

The word “subluxation” comes from the Latin words meaning “to dislocate” (luxate) and “somewhat or slightly” (sub). A subluxation means a slight dislocation (misalignment) or malfunctioning of the vertebrae (bones of the spine). These disturbances may irritate nerve roots and blood vessels which branch off from the spinal cord between each of the vertebrae. This irritation may cause pain and dysfunction in muscle, lymphatic, and organ tissue as well as imbalance in the normal body processes.

What causes subluxation?

A fall, injury, sudden jar, trauma, in the past or present, or sometimes an inherited spinal weakness can displace a vertebra. Other causes include improper sleeping conditions or habits, occupational hazards, incorrect lifting practices, obesity, lack of rest and exercise, and emotional and chemical stress.

Do adjustments hurt?

For most patients, chiropractic adjustments are painless. Some patients who are new to chiropractic treatments may involuntarily stiffen or resist the adjustment and feel a small amount of discomfort until they are able to relax during treatment. In addition, mild discomfort may be felt if the patient has had a recent trauma, such as whiplash, due to inflammation. However, most patients report a feeling of relief, calmness, and a sense of well-being after the adjustment.

Is chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Every health care procedure from taking aspirin to giving blood involves a level or risk. Chiropractic adjustments are among the safest of all health care interventions because they are non-surgical, drug-free, and present an extremely low risk. And they work! Clearwater Chiropractic is your answer to safe chiropractic care in Savage, MN.

How old should a person be before he or she begins chiropractic care?

Chiropractic patients range in years from birth to old age. Regardless of age, the vertebrae can become misaligned. In fact, the birth process often causes trauma to the neck and spine, so it is wise to have children checked as soon as possible to make sure their nervous system is functioning properly. Left uncorrected, the vertebral subluxation may disturb the delicate spinal cord and nerves which control the youngster’s muscles and organs. In some cases, an uncorrected subluxation may lead to a deformity of the spinal column. An early chiropractic checkup may detect many spinal problems while they are still easily correctable. Clearwater Chiropractic is your home for Chiropractic in Savage, MN for all ages.
